chapter of the American Academy of Audiology provides a collective
voice for audiologists in managing the important issues impacting
them in the Commonwealth.
The
Massachusetts Academy of Audiology (MAA) held its first annual
meeting at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center
in Worcester last month, the culmination of more than two
years of planning and preparation. The MAA is the local chapter
of the American Academy of Audiology, both guided by the premise
of promoting quality hearing and balance care by advancing
the profession of audiology through leadership, advocacy,
education, public awareness and support of research.
“Providing
a collective voice for the hundreds of licensed audiologists
in Massachusetts is long overdue,” said Paul Milner,
Ph.D., CCC-A and President of the MAA. “As an affiliated
chapter of the American Academy of Audiology we are able to
represent Massachusetts at the national level while also providing
leadership in managing a range of important issues affecting
audiologists throughout the Commonwealth.”
The
MAA will focus its efforts on issues such as how advancements
in technology are impacting clinical outcomes, education and
oversight surrounding regulatory and legislative changes,
and the professional advancement of licensed audiologists.
The
MAA’s inaugural event featured the presentation of the
first Honors of the Massachusetts Academy of Audiology, awarded
to Herman Allan Schill, former Professor of Audiology in the
Department of Communication Disorders at Boston University
and Director of the Veterans Administration Outpatient Service
Center in Boston. Dr. Schill - a resident of Sharon, MA -
was honored by the MAA for his years of distinguished service
to the field of audiology.
Speakers
at the conference included presentations by Frank Musiek,
Ph.D., Director of Auditory Research and Professor of Audiology
at the University of Connecticut; Todd Sauter, MA, Director
of the Department of Audiology at the University of Massachusetts
Memorial Medical Center; and Brian Fligor, ScD, Director of
Diagnostic Audiology at Children’s Hospital in Boston.
